PROVO — Declaring that "with God nothing is impossible," Helen S.K. Goo related during Women's Conference the account of her conversion to the Church in Hong Kong in the 1950s, her overcoming ostracism and her gratitude for the blessings of the restored gospel and the counsel of a prophet.
"We are the one who put limits on His miracles because we lack faith in our hearts that He is the all powerful God," she told women gathered May 4 in the Marriott Center.
Sister Goo related how she met the missionaries and, after meeting with several sets of elders, was challenged to read and pray about the Book of Mormon. She did and gained a testimony. "As I continued to study and pray I became a very active non-member of the branch," she said, drawing chuckles from the audience.
She was finally baptized on Aug. 1, 1958, but with opposition from her family and from her school, which eventually expelled her. Finally, in 1962, at the age of about 16, she left for the United States to live with the family of Elder Roger Romrell from Idaho Falls, Idaho. The Romrells treated her as a member of the family. From them, she learned the lives of a family active in the Church. Eventually, she attended the Church College of Hawaii and met her husband, Charles Goo, who later served as president of the Hong Kong Mission.
In her remarks, Sister Goo said, "Faith comes from a believing heart." She explained, "It is extremely important that we nurture our hearts with knowledge of the divinity of our Father in Heaven and the Savior Jesus Christ. Sisters, we must check our hearts regularly and ask ourselves these questions:
• "Do I know that Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ live and they love me?
• "Do I know that Jesus Christ died and atoned for my sins?
• "Do I know that I am a daughter of God?
• "Do I know that God is at the helm and He knows what is best for His children?
• "Do I listen to and obey the counsels of our living prophet President Gordon B. Hinckley?
• "Do I live the gospel to the best of my ability?
"If by any chance our answers are not affirmative then it is time to humble ourselves and follow these guidelines in the Book of Helaman: 'Nevertheless they did fast and pray oft, and did wax stronger and stronger in their humility and firmer and firmer in the faith in Christ, unto the filling their souls with joy and consolation, yea, even to the purifying and the sanctification of their hearts, which sanctification cometh because of their yielding their hearts unto God.'"
