This week in Church history

Brigham Henry Roberts, author of the six-volume "Comprehensive History of the Church," was praised at his funeral by President Heber J. Grant for "the wonderful faith that this man had," according to the Oct. 7, 1933, Church News.

Elder B.H. Roberts of the First Council of the Seventy died Sept. 27, 1933, in Salt Lake City at age 76. His funeral was held in the Salt Lake Tabernacle on Oct. 1.

In his tribute to Elder Roberts, President Grant said he rejoiced in "his marvelous and complete knowledge of the gospel, of his great ability to defend it."

Elder Roberts wrote a serialized history of the Church, printed in the magazine Americana beginning in 1909 and running for six years. It was those articles that were gathered, updated and printed as "Comprehensive History of the Church."

Elder Roberts was also instrumental in starting the Church magazine Improvement Era, serving as associate editor.

The Church News recorded President Grant stating during the funeral: "I believe as much if not more credit is due to Elder Roberts in starting off the Era as a defender of truth and creating a love for its contents, than to any other man."
