Numbers preceding stakes and missions are their chronological numbers assigned at the time of creation. Letters are added if number has been used previously.

A Mormon immigrant company under direction of Samuel Brannan departed on the ship Brooklyn from New York on 4 February 1846 en route to the Great Salt Lake valley via California. The group under the direction of Brannan navigated the southern tip of South America around Cape Horn and arrived at Yerba Buena on 31 July 1846. The company of around 230 people were the first known Latter-day Saints to set foot in California. Their numbers tripled the population of tiny Yerba Buena. They soon helped build it into the prosperous city of San Francisco. While there, Brannan and other Saints began publication of one of California's first English-language newspapers, the California Star, in October 1846. One of the Brooklyn saints, Angeline Lovett, set up a school in the old Franciscan Dolores Mission, the first English-language school in California.
During the early autumn of 1846 Brannan led 20 men to the San Joaquin Valley, about 70 miles east of San Francisco where they founded a Mormon farming village named New Hope Colony. It soon failed as heavy seasonal storms flooded the valley, destroying their crops. Most of the Brooklyn saints left California for Salt Lake City in 1848. On their way, they carved an emigrant road that would be used by thousands of westward bound travelers including the gold rush "Forty-Niners."
In January 1847, the Mormon Battalion arrived in San Diego. Battalion members helped construct a number of buildings and public works in San Diego. They then traveled to Los Angeles where they built a fort and raised the first American flag. Six discharged battalion members were at Sutter's Mill in northern California when gold was discovered there on 24 January 1848. The diary of battalion veteran Henry W. Bigler is used by historians to determine the details of the discovery of gold in California.
In February 1856, George Q. Cannon began publication in San Francisco of the Western Standard, a weekly periodical supportive of the Church.
The first colonization from Utah to California came in 1851 when a company of about 450 Saints under direction of Elders Amasa M. Lyman and Charles C. Rich of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles settled at what is now San Bernardino. The colony was the final settlement in a string of Mormon communities extending 800 miles from Salt Lake City. The community thrived, and on 6 July 1851 the San Bernardino Stake, California's first, was organized. Faithful members in this colony were eventually outnumbered by less-committed members who created considerable dissension. When the troubled colony was dissolved by the Church at the advance of Johnston's Army toward Salt Lake City in 1857, about 1,400 — fewer than half the total — returned to Utah to colonize other areas. With the departure in 1857 the San Bernardino Stake was dissolved, and for a period of 35 years, the Church did not have formally organized ecclesiastical units in the state.
Missionary work was conducted in California from 1849-1858. It was discontinued when missionaries were recalled to Utah during the Utah War. The work remained dormant until 1892 when missionary activities were resumed by Luther Dalton who began missionary labors in San Francisco and Oakland. In 1894, Karl G. Maeser relocated to California to direct the Utah exhibit of the California's mid-winter fair and to serve as president of the newly re-established California Mission.
The Los Angeles Branch was created on 20 August 1895, and a year later, the Northern California and Southern California conferences were organized. The Sacramento Conference was added in 1898. Most missionary work in California before the turn of the century took place in the larger population centers.
In the 1920s, a number of talented Church members immigrated to California. Many of them and their descendants became noted leaders, including two California governors, a Church president, and internationally recognized figures in science, business, education, sports, and the arts. Since the immigration to California of the 1920s, nearly 10 percent of the membership of the Church has lived in the Golden State.
The first stake created in the state in the 20th century was the Los Angeles Stake, organized on 21 January 1923. On 22 May 1927, the Los Angeles Stake was divided to form the Los Angeles and Hollywood stakes. Shortly afterwards, on 10 July 1927, the San Francisco Stake was established.
By 1930, Church members in California numbered 21,254.
On the opening day of the San Francisco World's Fair on 18 February 1939, some 1,400 people visited the Church's exhibit, a visitors center portraying a reduced-size Salt Lake Tabernacle.
Eight California stakes were created in the 1930s, five in the 1940s, and 30 in the 1950s.
Land for California's first temple was purchased in 1937 in Los Angeles. The temple, the second largest in the Church, was dedicated in 1956. A second temple was dedicated in Oakland in 1964, followed by others dedicated in San Diego in 1993, Fresno in 2000, and Redlands in 2003. Temples are now under construction in Newport Beach and Sacramento.
The Church has a strong presence among minority groups. There are over 200 Church ethnic units and six ethnic stakes in California.
President Spencer W. Kimball spoke to a Los Angeles Area Conference in the Rose Bowl on 17-18 May 1980, drawing an estimated 75,000 members. Conference talks were simultaneously translated into seven languages. This is believed to be the largest number of members ever gathered for a Church meeting anywhere in the world.
By 1980, membership in the state totaled 541,000. From 1991 to 1993, because of an out- migration of members, membership dropped from 721,000 to 719,000. However, from 1993 to 1995, membership rose to 725,690. The Church is now the second largest religious denomination in California, with a membership of more than 740,000 in 1999.
In July 1996, the sesquicentennial of the arrival of the ship Brooklyn was celebrated through the re-enactment of the event on a replica ship that sailed into San Francisco Bay. Members throughout the state commemorated the milestone anniversary.
In San Diego's Old Town on 18 January 1997, some 2,400 members re-enacted the arrival of the Mormon Battalion in California 150 years earlier. Other Mormon Battalion celebrations along the coast followed on respective anniversaries. On 6 March 1997, President Gordon B. Hinckley spoke to a record audience of the Los Angeles World Affairs Council, and on 19 March, he addressed the World Forum of Silicon Valley. He also spoke at various Church events during the year. A Church-produced video depicting the discovery of gold at Sutter's Mill was donated to the state of California to be shown continuously at Marshall Gold Discovery State Park in Coloma.
At the beginning of the year 2000, California had 17 missions, more than any other state in the United States. In the state's major cities, many minority converts have been taught the gospel in their own language. With significant immigration to California from Latin America, five Spanish-speaking stakes have been organized, two since 1992. Various Asian and Polynesian wards function as well, and a Tongan stake was created in San Francisco in 1992.
In 2002, membership reached 765,883.
In May 2003, hundreds of Los Angeles-area Muslims and members of the Pasadena California Stake joined in preparing emergency supplies for Iraqi families. With conflicts of the war with Iraq completed, a humanitarian aid day was set for 10 May 2003 where hygiene kits for some 10,000 families were completed and added to a $650,000 shipment of medical supplies and blankets donated by the Church.
President Hinckley attended the rededication of the historic Hollywood (now Los Angeles California California) Stake tabernacle on 8 June 2003.
Membership in 2003 was 770,885.
President Hinckley dedicated the Newport Beach Temple on 28 August 2005, the sixth temple in California, and the 122nd in the Church. The 17,800 square-foot edifice, built on fertile soil once occupied by orange groves, served 47,000 members in 16 stakes.
President Hinckley returned to California on 3 September 2006 to dedicate the Sacramento California Temple, the seventh temple in California and the 123rd in the Church. It serves a district of 80,000 members.
