The Church on Facebook

Social media allow every member a voice

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints isn't new to Facebook. The official page for the Church launched in May 2008 and over the last two years the Church presence has grown. Nearly two dozen official Facebook pages featuring everything from the Mormon Tabernacle Choir to LDS Technology exist.

Facebook is an online social networking website started in 2004. MSNBC reports as of Jan. 5, 2011, the site has over 600 million users and is growing every day. It is available in more than 70 translations, and 70 percent of Facebook users live outside the United States. Facebook is a great way to find old friends, keep in touch with family or share information. Users can create their own personal web page on Facebook with information and photos showing what they're up to. They can invite friends to view their pages with their permission only. As of January 2011, the total "friends" of all the Church's official Facebook pages — including mormon.org, LDS Newsroom, Mormon Messages and others — numbered more than one million.

At the December 2007 BYU-Hawaii commencement, Elder Russell M. Ballard of the Quorum of the Twelve said, "May I ask that you join the conversation by participating on the Internet to share the gospel and to explain in simple and clear terms the message of the Restoration."

Joining the Church's official Facebook pages is a great way to share your faith. You can connect to it and read messages, leave your own comments or link to it by visiting www.facebook.com/lds. The Church's Facebook page also features a list of other official Church-sponsored Facebook pages.

"The day cometh that the words of the book which were sealed shall be read upon the house tops ... and all things shall be revealed unto the children of men ... even unto the end of the earth" (2 Nephi 27:11). According to the UN's telecommunications agency, the number of Internet users worldwide surpassed two billion at the begining of 2011.
