Just a little less than two weeks after her 93rd birthday, Sister Hortense Hogan Child Smith, former member of the Young Women general presidency, died peacefully at her home in Salt Lake City on May 17. President Thomas S. Monson was among those who spoke at her funeral on May 23 in the Salt Lake Monument Park Stake Center.

Sister Smith, wife of emeritus Church Patriarch Eldred G. Smith, served as first counselor in the Young Women general presidency with Sister Ruth H. Funk from 1972-78. Sister Smith served also on the Young Women (MIA) general board and Adult Correlation Committee. She served as a Navy WAVE 1943-45, with the rank of Lt. (jg) Corpus.

She spent many days touring, presenting and lecturing with her husband concerning artifacts belonging to Hyrum Smith, Eldred Smith's great-great-grandfather and brother to the Prophet Joseph Smith.

Sister Smith is survived by her husband; a son, Thomas Child; two sisters, Maxine Wilker and Meridith Scott; and stepchildren, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Robert Child, and a daughter, Carol Jane.
