Scholars and students gather at Mormon History Association Conference

CALGARY, ALBERTA

Enthusiasts from far-flung locales gathered for the 47th annual Mormon History Association Conference, held this year in western Canada on the campus of the University of Calgary June 28-July 1.

More than 130 scholars and students delivered presentations in nearly 50 sessions. The organization casts a wide net, with participants who may or may not be Latter-day Saints and who hold various points of view.

Staff members from the Church History Department are actively involved in the association; Richard L. Jensen, a senior historian in the department was the association president this year, and Elder Marlin K. Jensen, Church Historian and Recorder, delivered the traditional Sunday devotional address concluding the conference.

The Canadian province of Alberta is rich in LDS history, and some conference attendees availed themselves of pre- and post-conference tours, visiting towns founded by Church members in the late 1800s or taking in nearby Banff and Waterton Lakes national parks and historic sites.

On these pages are reports of a few of the conference presentations. Other coverage has been carried in the Mormon Times supplement to the Deseret News. Other articles from the conference are planned for future issues of the Church News.
