The stars were out and shining brightly on the evening of Aug. 10, as the Mormon Tabernacle Choir together with the Utah Symphony performed in the fresh mountain air at the Deer Valley Music Festival at Park City, Utah. The festival highlighted these two local musical favorites with a summer concert called "The American Songbook" at the Deer Valley Resort Snow Park Outdoor Amphitheater.
On a hill sloping down to the stage, concert-goers sprawled out on blankets and camping chairs, tapping toes to some of America's most beloved tunes composed by American composers. The music included patriotic anthems, folk hymns and spirituals and show tunes from America's past. The evening began with "The Star Spangled Banner" and concluded with "Battle Hymn of the Republic." Other favorites included "Sunrise, Sunset" from the musical "Fiddler on the Roof," "Battle of Jericho," an American spiritual and "Seventy-Six Trombones," from the musical "The Music Man."
The festival, in its ninth year, has become a favorite for the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, which sings at music festivals around the country from Tanglewood in Massachusetts to Chautauqua in New York to Wolftrap in Virginia to Red Rocks in Colorado.
