Elder Graham Watson Doxey, former member of the Second Quorum of the Seventy, passed away at his home in Salt Lake City on Oct. 13, 2013. He was 86.
"He was a very gentle person and close with his family," David Doxey, his brother, said. "He had strong family ties with his wife, children, siblings and parents."
Elder Doxey was sustained to the Second Quorum of the Seventy on April 6, 1991, and honorably released on Oct. 5, 1996.
Elder Doxey served as a bishop, stake president, president of the Missouri Independence Mission from 1973-76, president of the Europe North Area, Manti Utah Temple president and president of the Church's Europe West Area.
"Family is really the only association that is eternal," Elder Doxey said after being called to the Second Quorum of the Seventy. "Other relationships in life come and go, so why not concentrate on the one unit that is going to endure?" (Ensign, May 1991).
His wife, Mary Lou Doxey, also shared that same family spirit. "I always wanted a large family," she said in a Church News interview. "When I was growing up, I heard my father say many times, 'There's nothing that will bring you greater joy than having a large family,' " (Church News, April 27, 1991). Elder Doxey and his wife are the parents of 12 children and have 84 grandchildren and 92 great-grand children.
Elder Doxey was President of Doxey-Layton Co., a real estate management firm, and a graduate of the University of Utah in 1952, after attending a year at the University of Louisville. He also attended graduate school in 1953.
Before his college education, he served in the U.S. Navy from 1945-46. Shortly afterward, he served a mission in the newly created Central Atlantic States Mission for two years.
Elder Doxey was born in Salt Lake City on March 30, 1927, to Graham H. Doxey and Leone Watson Doxey. He and Mary Lou Young were married on June 22, 1950, in the Salt Lake Temple.
A funeral will be held on Monday, Oct. 21, at 11 a.m. at the Salt Lake Foothill Stake Center, 1930 S. 2100 E., Salt Lake City.
