Sandy YSA food drive

Utah Food Bank benefits from donated canned goods

SANDY, UTAH

Members of the Sandy Utah YSA Stake, as part of their weekly Monday evening activity, collected canned food donations and created gospel themed sculptures before donating the items to the Utah Food Bank on Nov. 18.

“It’s a great way to meet and mingle while providing service to others,” said Dave McMillan, a member of the stake’s high council. “It’s friendly and fun.”

This was the third year the stake held the food drive.

“We want to make a difference in the community, plus it’s great service,” said Ole Smith, second counselor in the stake presidency.

Nicole London of the Flat Iron YSA Ward explained the organization and execution of the activity. “We first went out to our home stake neighborhoods and collected from members, door to door. Then at the stake center, we had about an hour to build our sculptures out of the canned food we collected.”

Designs ranged from the Draper Utah Temple to Noah’s ark.

That evening, the Sandy Utah YSA Stake donated 10,752 pounds of canned goods to the Utah Food Bank.

“It was an amazing amount of donated food,” Brother Smith said in an email. “The driver told me he doesn’t recall seeing this much from one small group before.”
