What exactly is Family Discovery Day? Find out for yourself on February 6 without leaving your home.
Family Discovery Day is an event filled with inspirational stories and insightful tips for strengthening your family connections and discovering treasures hidden in your own family history. The upcoming 2016 RootsTech Family Discovery Day in Salt Lake City will be streamed live on LDS.org.
Here are a five reasons why you should watch Family Discovery Day on LDS.org:
#1. A Renlund family discussion
At the opening session of Family Discovery Day starting at 1:00 p.m., Elder Dale G. Renlund of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles will be joined by his wife, Ruth Lybbert Renlund, and daughter, Ashley. Get an inside look into a typical Renlund family discussion as they share their own perspectives on a personal family history experience.
#2. Best friends discuss family history
Family Discovery Day will include a family history discussion between best friends Sheri L. Dew, CEO of Deseret Book, and Sister Wendy Watson Nelson, wife of President Russell M. Nelson, President of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles. Watch a candid and real interaction between friends as they each share their own experiences with family history. This session will also include video appearances from people in their lives with inspiring stories, including a message from President Nelson.
#3. Leaders share personal stories
Hear personal family stories from Church leaders. Brother Stephen Owen, Young Men general president, will share a personal and emotional family story about his daughter. Sister Rosemary M. Wixom, Primary general president, will also share stories about her family, as well as what she wants to do during the millennium with her photos. Brother Owen and Sister Wixom will be the featured speakers at the family session.
#4. The Renlunds talk explosives
The Renlund family will compare the explosive nature of dynamite with the equally powerful effect of combining family history work with attending the temple. The combination is an “explosive” experience. Learn how to arm yourself and your family with personal power as you understand and participate in the dual nature of the work of salvation.
#5. Football meets family history
At the youth session starting at 4:15 p.m., football players Taysom Hill and Britain Covey will take the stage and share inspiring stories, funny memories and faith-building experiences. Britain Covey is a University of Utah standout who recently announced via Twitter his mission call to the Chile Rancagua Mission. Taysom Hill is an accomplished and popular Brigham Young University quarterback.
Family Discovery Day will be streamed live in English and with Spanish, French, and Portuguese translations for selected sessions. Times are in mountain standard time.
