Elder Gary E. Stevenson of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles spoke in the Sunday afternoon session of the October 2018 general conference. These are a few memorable quotes from his address:
“We reach out in love to others because it is what our Savior commanded us to do.”“Our greatest challenges and our greatest rewards may come as we minister to lost sheep.”“As children of a loving Heavenly Father and as sheep in His flock, we enjoy the blessing of being individually ministered to by Jesus Christ. Simultaneously, we have a responsibility to provide ministering assistance to others around us as shepherds ourselves.”
It is remarkable how small efforts can have eternal consequences. “This truth is at the heart of the Church’s ministering efforts.”
The Lord is the Good Shepherd — and He requires the assistance in the challenging labor of caring for the sheep in His flock.
Everyone is a shepherd. No calling is required. All are commissioned to the work. All have a duty to provide ministering to those who are lost or in need of assistance.
The Lord does not expect His servants to perform miracles. “He only asks that we bring our brothers and sisters unto Him for He has the power to redeem souls.”
Ministering, taught Elder Stevenson, is literally the work of eternity. As the Good Shepherd, Jesus Christ will “stay on the mountain” to protect His sheep through wind, rainstorms, snow and more.
