A new video shows Latter-day Saints coping with the aftermath of a November wildfire that destroyed their community and finding "Beauty for Ashes."
The November Camp Fire in California hit the Latter-day Saint community hard, destroying a church meetinghouse and members' homes.
"It's so ugly," says one woman, standing inside the devastation of Paradise, California. "It used to be beautiful."
The video chronicles individuals returning to their homes to find remnants of their past lives, like a bowl used for breakfast and a food dehydrator.
"I don't know why you look for things like that, but somehow it's validating," one woman says. "I had a life."
The church members talk about finding peace by joining in the efforts to serve. Latter-day Saints worked shoulder to shoulder with strangers to alleviate suffering in the community.
"We know that in order to feel better, that if we serve others, we're going to feel more peace for ourselves," one woman says.
President Russell M. Nelson of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints visited Paradise in January with his wife, Sister Wendy Nelson. He notes that those who lost the most gave the most.
"They're still giving," he said.
