Church announces location of Washington County Utah Temple

The location of the Washington County Utah Temple has been announced — and it gives the city of St. George its second temple.

Located on a 14-acre site northeast of 3000 E. 1580 South, the temple is projected to be three stories high and 88,000 feet.

President Russell M. Nelson announced during October 2018 general conference that a second temple would be built in Utah’s southwest.

The historic St. George Temple, which was dedicated in 1877, closed on Nov. 4, 2019, and is expected to reopen in 2022.

Additional details, including interior and exterior renderings of the Washington County temple, are still being developed. A groundbreaking date for the temple will be forthcoming.

“Many people are moving here,” said President Daniel K. Frei, Santa Clara Utah Stake president, when the Washington County Temple was announced. “We do have a temple, but only so much work can be done, and a lot of temple work is being done. We are already at capacity.”

He added: “This will provide an opportunity for more Church members to serve in the temple. It is also an indication of the Lord’s confidence in the people who live in the area. We will need to staff the new temple and do the work — it creates more opportunity for us to serve.”

There are 17 operating temples in Utah, with new temples announced in Layton, Orem, Saratoga Springs, Taylorsville and Tooele Valley. The Salt Lake Temple is scheduled to close on Dec. 29, 2019, for renovations and is scheduled to reopen in 2024 with a public open house.
