Groundbreaking date announced for Praia Cabo Verde Temple

The Church has announced that the Praia Cabo Verde Temple groundbreaking will be held on May 4.

According to a Feb. 8 Newsroom release, Elder Paul V. Johnson, General Authority Seventy and president of the Europe Area, will preside at the groundbreaking. Attendance at the site will be by invitation only, and the services are anticipated to be transmitted via internet to local meetinghouses within the proposed temple district.

A rendering of the temple has also been made public, featuring a single-story building with a spire "reflective of the architectural styles in the area," according to the article.

The temple will be built in the capital city of Praia on the island of Santiago and located east of Avenida Cidade de Lisboa in the Tahiti Cha de Areia neighborhood. In October 2018 general conference, President Russell M. Nelson first announced the building of the temple, in addition to 11 other temples.

Carlos Pires, who works at the United States Embassy in Cape Verde, shared his reaction with the Church News when he first heard that the temple would be built in his African nation.

“When I came home, everyone was crying and happy,” he wrote in an email. “They told me that they all started crying in the Church when they heard the news and saw the temple on the map.”

Cabo Verde, also known as Cape Verde in English, is a country of 10 islands off the west coast of Africa. It is home to 42 congregations and more than 14,000 Church members.
