The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints helped build two wells in the district of Monsefú, in the province of Chiclayo, Peru, which will provide safe drinking water to rural communities.
The water wells each include a booth, submersible pump, elevated tank and household connections. One was unveiled Aug. 19 in the Villa Gonzales sector. The other was unveiled Aug. 20 in the Rama Guzmán sector, according to the Church’s Peru Newsroom.
Previously, people in each sector had to carry water to their homes for use. The collaboration between the Church and authorities in Monsefú will supply drinking water to the families in their homes, eliminating the need to travel far or collect water from potentially unsafe sources.

At the meetings, the mayor of Monsefú, Manuel Pisfil, praised the work of the Church and expressed gratitude for the project that will benefit the community. And Father Santiago Gonzales Gamonal, Catholic parish priest of Monsefú, read Matthew 22:36-39 with the second great commandment: “Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself.”
Jesús Llontop Reyes, representing The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, commented to those present that it is a blessing to have the opportunity to help improve the quality of life of the community. He said, “When we are at the service of our fellow men, we are at the service of God,” paraphrasing Mosiah 2:17.
He also unveiled a commemorative plaque at the location of each well with the help of a resident of the village.
The municipality of Monsefú and the Church continue to coordinate other projects with the purpose of providing water to sectors of the district that have the most need.
