In the early hours of Wednesday, Oct. 25, Hurricane Otis made landfall on the southern coast of Mexico.
The Category 5 storm sustained winds of 165 miles (300 kilometers) per hour. Reuters called Otis one of the most powerful storms ever to hit the country.
The wind and rain damaged several cities in the Mexican state of Guerrero, knocking over trees and flooding streets. Acapulco also suffered landslides and lost power and cellphone service, according to USA Today.

All missionaries in the Mexico Cuernavaca Mission serving in the area are accounted for and safe, reported a news release from the Church’s Mexico Newsroom.
Elder Hugo Montoya, General Authority Seventy and president of the Church’s Mexico Area, released the following statement:
“Our prayers are with all those who have been affected by this hurricane. The Church is actively working to help the people who are going through these difficult times through the established programs and our humanitarian aid allies.”
The Mexico Area presidency also said it is evaluating mechanisms to join the aid for people affected by the hurricane.
