During the week of May 21-27, the Church News reported on President Dallin H. Oaks, first counselor in the First Presidency, speaking in a worldwide devotional to young single adults, and President Henry B. Eyring, second counselor in the First Presidency, shared a principle that he learned about trusting in the Lord in a Church News video.

Elder Dale G. Renlund of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles warned BYU–Pathway students against “looking beyond the mark,” and Elder Ronald A. Rasband of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles invited Church members to get to know Jesus Christ better while ministering in South Africa.

Elsewhere, Young Women General President Bonnie H. Cordon encouraged missionaries at the Provo Missionary Training Center, saying that they were “commending themselves to the Lord.” Family Services commissioner Sherilyn C. Stinson discussed the importance of emotional and mental health in a new Church News podcast episode. Deaf leaders of the Church shared how they serve in their wards and stakes. A missionary in Africa was shown a tender mercy through a familiar T-shirt and the Church provided an update on the Temple Square renovations.

In a devotional broadcast to 18- to 30-year-olds across the globe on Sunday, May 21, President Oaks and his wife, Sister Kristen M. Oaks, offered loving counsel for young adults regarding marriage and dating.

In anticipation of his 90th birthday coming up on May 31, President Eyring shared his 38-word acceptance speech after being named president of Ricks College, now BYU–Idaho, in 1971 and how the principle he shared there guided every major decision in his life.

While on a ministry visit in South Africa, Elder Rasband invited youth and adults of the Church to cast aside fears, remember the Savior and strive to be peacemakers.

Elder Renlund spoke during a BYU–Pathway devotional about the pitfalls of farsightedness on Tuesday, May 23. He used the story of King Tutankhamun’s tomb to reveal the dangers of being spiritually hyperopic.

President Cordon told missionaries in the Provo Missionary Training Center to allow the Lord to teach and guide them. She recounted the story of the brother of Jared in the Book of Mormon to explain how to trust in the Lord.

Three deaf Latter-day Saint leaders spoke to the Church News about their experiences in their respective leadership callings, including President Michael Ballard, second counselor of the Provo Utah South Stake and one of the first deaf men to serve in a stake presidency.

8. ‘God is in the details of my life’: Missionary in Africa finds his cousin’s baseball shirt

Elder Brayden Call, a missionary in the Ghana Kumasi Mission, saw a boy wearing a T-shirt that said Caldwell on it, causing Elder Call to do a double take — Caldwell was a local baseball team for which his cousin used to play.

9. Temple Square renovation update: 1st base isolator now installed, plaza to partially reopen June 1

Foundations for the base isolators are installed on the new footing of the temple. The lower foundation will support the base isolators and transfer girders at the west towers of the temple.

The first of 98 base isolators have been installed as part of the ongoing Salt Lake Temple and Temples Square renovations. The base isolators are designed to help stabilize the temple in case of a seismic event. Also, the plaza next to the Church Office Building is scheduled to partially reopen on June 1.
