Here are 9 stories from the Church News from the week of Oct. 29-Nov. 4

During the week of Oct. 29–Nov. 4, the Church announced that with the number of missionaries now exceeding 72,000, there will be 36 new missions worldwide. The date for the First Presidency’s Christmas Devotional was announced. President Henry B. Eyring, first counselor in the First Presidency, posted a message of gratitude and hope on social media after the passing of his wife. 

President M. Russell Ballard, Acting President of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, returned home after a short time in the hospital. During a trip to Washington D.C. Elder Dieter F. Uchtdorf of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles met with nine ambassadors and three senatorsElder Quentin L. Cook of the Quorum of the Twelve Aposltes ministered in Europe, including meetings that benefited local Church leaders and members in both Russia and Ukraine.

Ground was broken for the Fort Worth Texas Temple. ‘Luz de las Naciones’ featured songs and dances from various countries. The Church News podcast featured the Rev. Dr. Andrew Teal in the first in a two-part series.

With its more than 72,000 full-time missionaries exceeding pre-COVID-19 pandemic totals, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints will add 36 new missions worldwide next summer to accommodate the growing numbers.

President Eyring wrote he was both ‘humbled and grateful’ for the prayers and service rendered to him and his family since Sister Eyring ‘passed onto the other side of the veil.’

President Ballard has returned home following a short stay in the hospital, he wrote in a social media post Thursday, Nov. 2.

Elder Cook visited Europe Oct. 18 through Oct. 30 — addressing Latter-day Saints first in Kazakhstan (including a meeting with Russian leaders in the Church’s Eurasian Area), and then in Ukraine. They also participated in other member, missionary and leadership meetings.
