The self-reliance course “Finding Strength in the Lord: Emotional Resilience” has been helping participants build more emotional resilience — the ability to adapt to challenges, change thinking patterns and increase positive emotions, all while moving forward with faith in Jesus Christ.
The 10-week course offered by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints began more than two years ago and is now offered globally in 30 languages.
In a new video from the Church, Bishop L. Todd Budge, second counselor in the Presiding Bishopric, speaks about the blessings of learning these skills.
“As we learn and practice emotional resilience in our own lives, we can feel greater hope, which can anchor us to the Savior during tempestuous trials,” Bishop Budge said. “And as we become more resilient ourselves, we can be a light for others amid their trials.”
Participants in the group meetings have shared how they learned healthier responses to life experiences, more hope for their situation and strength through the teachings of Jesus Christ.
Said Bishop Budge: “Even in the midst of our trials, we can find hope and give hope to others by learning and practicing emotional resilience, including the skills taught in [this] course.”
Topics covered include building emotional resilience, developing healthy thinking patterns, managing stress and anxiety, understanding sadness and depression, overcoming anger and building healthy relationships.
Downloadable manuals and videos for the emotional resilience course are available at ChurchofJesusChrist.org. They can also be viewed on the Gospel Library app under Life Help. Physical copies of the manuals are available for purchase at Church distribution centers.
Those interested in the free training are encouraged to reach out to their local Church leaders to learn when groups are scheduled to meet in their areas, explained a news release from ChurchofJesusChrist.org.
Other self-reliance groups the Church offers include Personal Finances, Starting and Growing My Business, Find a Better Job and Education for Better Work.
