The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints will host a service convention from June 16-25 in support of the 2023 Special Olympics World Games happening in Berlin, Germany, during the same dates.
About 1,000 young adults between the ages of 18 and 35 are expected to volunteer during the service convention, ChurchofJesusChrist.org reported. Registration for the event is now closed.
In a recent letter to young adults across Europe, Church leaders in the Europe Central Area wrote that God has given His children both the opportunity and the responsibility to follow the Savior by serving others.
“This conference is an unforgettable opportunity to serve and rejoice with many of our Heavenly Father’s wonderful children who are often marginalized,” they wrote.
The Special Olympics World Games are the world’s largest inclusive sporting event, ChurchofJesusChrist.org reported. Some 7,000 athletes with disabilities will compete in 26 disciplines, and up to 20,000 volunteers from around the world will assist.
Volunteers who registered through the Church’s service convention will travel to and from Berlin and their own expense, but the costs of their accommodation, training and meals will be covered. They can choose to volunteer for five or 10 days.
They will participate in competitions during the day and in Church-sponsored activities, such as dances and devotionals, in the evening. All volunteers must speak German or English and must adhere to Church standards during their service.
Young adults of other faiths or who consider themselves non-religious were also invited to attend the service convention. To learn more, visit the Europe Young Adult Service Conference Berlin 2023 website.
