The Savior heals, angels minister in newest episode of Book of Mormon Videos

The crowds in Bountiful see the Savior’s miracles, pray with Him and see angels come down from heaven

In contrast to His mortal ministry around Jerusalem, the Savior did not have weeks, months or years when he visited the ancient Americas following His Resurrection.

When he visited the Nephites, He had less time in which to teach and work miracles. The Book of Mormon Videos episode released Friday, Oct. 28, depicts 3 Nephi 17, where the Savior healed many individuals in a single occasion.

“My bowels are filled with compassion toward you,” Jesus Christ said in 3 Nephi 17:6

The scenes that follow in the latest episode include the Savior’s healing of the blind, deaf, lame and withered.

In the second half of the 12-minute episode, the Savior is joined by the “little children” he commanded be brought to Him. After He meets with each of them, He turns to the adults in the crowd and prays with them.

“I am troubled because of the wickedness of the people of the house of Israel,” He said.

His full prayer is not included in the chapter of scripture, but the prayer was described as one that “eye hath never seen, neither hath ear heard, before, so great and marvelous things” (3 Nephi 17:16).

After His prayer, those present “saw angels descending out of heaven as it were in the midst of fire” (3 Nephi 17:24).

Bringing people to Christ through the Book of Mormon

After filming the scenes included in this episode, actors and leaders of the Church who attended shared similar feelings of gratitude for the Savior and His compassion.

Sister Reyna I. Aburto, then second counselor in the Relief Society general presidency, said while visiting the set in July 2021, “We all feel that this is the central part of the Book of Mormon because it contains the words that Jesus told those people. It contains His teachings, His doctrine. And the sole purpose of this project is to testify of Him and to increase faith in Him.”

While Sister Aburto and others were moved with emotion while watching the filming of this season of Book of Mormon Videos, the purpose of the series isn’t to entertain the videos’ viewers.

“We are hoping that the result of this project is going to be that more people will turn to Christ and more people will also have the desire to read the Book of Mormon,” she said.

Season 5 of the Book of Mormon Videos has the ‘ultimate benefit’ of bringing people to Christ

Sister Aburto said Anthony Butters, the actor portraying the Savior in the series, memorized many of his lines and this allowed for the actors to go deeper into their scenes without cutting filming due to missed lines from the script.

As the Savior teaches in Bountiful, many of the crowd are sitting in families as they listen to Him. Likewise, Sister Aburto said she hopes families will watch these videos.

“We hope that these will be a supplement for the family to learn about Jesus Christ and about the Book of Mormon and all the doctrines and teachings that we find in there,” she said. “So hopefully, we will all get closer to Christ because of this. We want families to be learning about Him.”

Each section of verses that has been portrayed in the four seasons of the Book of Mormon Videos was prayed about by those helping to put them together, Sister Aburto said. The verses, the scripts, the sets, the costumes and the locations were all prayed about. She said the group sought direction and guidance from the Holy Ghost as they worked together.

“We have felt that power, and we have felt that guidance from heaven in our meetings as we have been looking over every detail,” she said. She said she hopes people know how much prayer went into the project and that others will know that they can receive guidance for whatever they need in their lives, as well.

“This is just an example, a symbol of what happens in our life, too, as we move through life and as we have to play it by ear and adapt to our circumstances,” Sister Aburto said.
