For Broadway singer and actor Michael Maliakel, The Tabernacle Choir at Temple Square’s Christmas specials were a “crucial part of Christmases in my family growing up.”
Maliakel and British actress Lesley Nicol joined the Tabernacle Choir, Orchestra and Bells at Temple Square and Gabriel’s Trumpets as the featured guest artists during the 2023 Christmas concerts Dec. 14-16 and “Music & the Spoken Word” on Dec. 17.

“I can’t believe I’m doing this, honestly. Like it, it feels really, really special,” Maliakel said of singing with the Tabernacle Choir.
Nicol narrated the story of how author Victor Hugo and his wife, Adele Hugo, began to have Christmas banquets in their home for orphaned and needy children.
“I feel it’s just the most exquisite thing to be standing next to, because the music is so glorious, and the singing is so glorious. I’m kind of like in a warm bath,” she said about being on stage with the choir and orchestra.
Maliakel said: “It will be hard to top Christmas after this Christmas.”
