How to improve a mindset when in a negative headspace

Instead of ignoring or suppressing emotions, try these steps instead

When experiencing overwhelming emotions, it is natural to want to ignore, suppress or escape them. People may feel like isolating themselves from others.

Here are some things to do instead when stuck in a negative headspace, as listed by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on its Caring social media channels.

Instead of ignoring or suppressing emotions, try:

  • Journaling about those feelings
  • Praying or meditating
  • Talking to a trusted person
  • Writing down gratitude and blessings

Instead of isolating and cutting off important relationships, try:

  • Doing recreational activities with friends
  • Going for a walk
  • Finding ways to help and serve others (see JustServe.org)

Instead of escaping through excessive screen time, try:

  • Taking a break from media and news
  • Doing a relaxing activity like yoga or tai chi
  • Making a treat for a friend
  • Intentionally reading
  • Listening to uplifting media

More information can be found through the Church’s emotional resilience resources — such as how to reduce stress and find strength in difficult times. Tips also include how to help others who are facing difficult times and what to say when someone else is struggling emotionally.

The Life Help section of Gospel Library also has information sorted by topic, including abuse; addiction; death, grief and loss; disabilities; divorce; family and relationships; mental and emotional health; pornography; same-sex attraction; and transgender.

If you need additional help, reach out to trusted loved ones, a spiritual leader or a licensed mental health counselor.
