The week of Oct. 9 through Oct. 15, the Church News reported on Elder Jeffrey R. Holland of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles receiving a Charles II Restoration Bible from the Rev. Andrew Teal. Elder Dieter F. Uchtdorf of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles spoke at a Hamilton New Zealand Temple youth devotional and received a greeting from a Maori warrior upon his arrival. Elder David A. Bednar visited Europe and spoke to Church members in Albania, Switzerland, Austria and Hungary.

Elder Quentin L. Cook of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles was featured in the new Church News video on religious leaders seeing “Compassion in Action.” Sister Amy A. Wright, first counselor in the Primary general presidency, spoke at a BYU–Idaho’s campus devotional. Pictures of the Quito Ecuador Temple were released before the open house, as well as location sites for the Singapore and Modesto temples.

Elder S. Gifford Nielsen, a General Authority Seventy, spoke on the Church New podcast about the Black 14, feeding the hungry and healing communities. 1. Elder Holland accepts rare gift from his friend, the Rev. Andrew Teal

Sitting at his desk at Church headquarters, Elder Jeffrey R. Holland of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles turned the pages of a rare King James version of the Bible. He examined the type and looked at the detailed images representing the six days of the Creation, copied from metal carvings.

The sacred book, a Charles II Restoration Bible, was printed in the late 1600s after the English Civil War. It was hand carried from England to Salt Lake City by Elder Holland’s “beloved colleague” — the Rev. Andrew Teal, a chaplain and theologian specializing in Christian history at Oxford’s Pembroke College.

2. Elder Uchtdorf receives Maori greeting and speaks at meetings in Hamilton, New Zealand

Wednesday, Oct. 12, just wasn’t an ordinary day in Hamilton, New Zealand, as local members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints welcomed Elder Dieter F. Uchtdorf with a pōwhiri, a traditional Maori greeting ceremony.

Friday and Saturday, during a 30-hour period, Elder Uchtdorf ministered at missionary, pioneer member, and youth and young single adult meetings in Hamilton in advance of the Hamilton New Zealand Temple rededication scheduled for Sunday, Oct. 16.

Elder Cook and members of New York City’s Commission of Religious Leaders gathered at Church headquarters in June 2022 to talk about working together to lift and strengthen society.

This Church News video, released last week and titled “Compassion in Action,” highlights Latter-day Saint efforts to help and serve those in need as well as the Church’s desire to link arms with others who feel accountable to God.

In 1969, 14 members of the University of Wyoming football team were unfairly dismissed for asking to participate in a peaceful racial protest in a game against Brigham Young University. A half-century later, on Sept. 24, 2022, two members of the group, now known as the “Black 14,” ceremoniously lit the Y on the mountain above BYU’s Cougar Stadium. At their side was Elder S. Gifford Nielsen, a General Authority Seventy and former BYU quarterback.
