For the next three weeks, the public is invited to tour the Cody Wyoming Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints prior to its October dedication.
From Thursday, Aug. 27, through Saturday, Sept. 12 — excluding Sundays — everyone is welcome to the open house of Wyoming’s third temple. Tours begin with a media day on Monday, Aug. 24, then invited guests will go through the building Aug. 25-26.
Three General Authority Seventies are guiding news representatives around the temple as today’s media day begins: Elder Ricardo P. Giménez, a member of the Church’s United States Central Area presidency; and Elder K. Brett Nattress and Elder Jeremiah J. Morgan, both assistant executive directors of the Temple Department.
In conjunction with Monday’s media day, the Church published interior and exterior photos of the temple Aug. 24 on ChurchofJesusChrist.org.
On Sunday, Oct. 25, Elder Clark G. Gilbert of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles will dedicate the Cody temple. The 10 a.m. dedication will be broadcast to congregations throughout the temple district and rebroadcast at 2 p.m. the same day.
This is the first temple Elder Gilbert will dedicate, with his call to the apostleship being this past February.
A single-story structure of 9,950 square feet, the Cody temple stands on a 4.7-acre site at 555 Temple View Lane, in Cody, Wyoming. With dedications currently scheduled, it’s planned to be the Church’s 227th operating temple.
Design and features
The building’s steel-framed modular structure is clad in glass-fiber-reinforced concrete. Inspiring the exterior designs was the city’s historic Sheridan Avenue — including crenellations and bracketed detailing — as well as Romanesque revival architecture, which is found throughout Wyoming, especially in religious buildings.
Art-glass windows showcase the green foliage and vibrant-red blossoms of the Indian paintbrush, Wyoming’s state flower, viewed from above. Decorative paint throughout the temple combines the repeating stamp patterns of Sheridan-style leather, local wildflowers and foliage, and stylized forms of the aesthetic movement.
The temple’s primary interior stone is porcelain tile, with nylon carpet used throughout the general areas and wool area rugs used in select rooms. Decorative lighting combines steel fixtures with a satin brass finish, hand-blown glass and both clear and frosted crystal.
Interior doors, made of quarter-sawn sapele wood, have a satin brass finish and decorative art glass. Millwork also uses quarter-sawn sapele, with carvings styled after Sheridan-style leatherwork, which originated in the area.
About the Cody temple
This temple was announced by the late Church President Russell M. Nelson on Oct. 3, 2021. It was one of 13 temples he announced in October 2021 general conference.
On Sept. 27, 2024, its groundbreaking signaled the start of the construction phase. Elder Steven R. Bangerter — a General Authority Seventy and then the first counselor in the Church’s North America Central Area presidency — presided over the ceremony.
In his dedicatory prayer on the site, Elder Bangerter pleaded for blessings upon the temple and all those who enter its walls. “We ask that they may feel a spirit of peace wash over them, granting them comfort and assurance that the presence of the temple will bring added joy, prosperity, beauty and unity to their lives and their community.”
The Church in Wyoming
This new temple in Cody is the third in Wyoming. It follows the Star Valley Wyoming Temple, dedicated in 2016, and the Casper Wyoming Temple, dedicated in 2024.
Latter-day Saints entered the state as early as 1846 in their pioneer travels. The Oregon, California and Mormon trails crossed through the middle of Wyoming, so most Latter-day Saint companies traveled through the state in their westward migration.
By the end of 1847, more than 2,000 pioneer members had crossed Wyoming into Utah. Wyoming’s first stake was organized in Star Valley in August 1892.
Now home to nearly 67,000 Latter-day Saints, Wyoming has more than 170 wards and branches.
