The First Presidency of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has announced a Saturday, March 1, 2025, groundbreaking for the Cali Colombia Temple, one of four houses of the Lord dedicated or in planning for the northern South America nation.
Elder Jorge T. Becerra, a General Authority Seventy and president of the Church’s South America Northwest Area presidency, will preside at the Cali groundbreaking, an invitation-only event.
A single-story edifice of roughly 9,500 square feet is planned to be built on the 3.14-acre site along Avenida 4A Norte in the La Flora urbanization of northern Cali.
The groundbreaking date was first published Monday, Dec. 8, on ChurchofJesusChrist.org.
Every effort is made to construct temples in an expeditious manner. At times, various reasons may delay a temple’s completion and dedication.
President Russell M. Nelson announced a temple for Cali on April 4, 2021, one of the 20 locations for new houses of the Lord that he identified in April 2021 general conference.
The Cali temple’s site location and exterior rendering were released on Sept. 21, 2021.
Once completed and dedicated, the Cali Colombia Temple will serve over 15,000 Latter-day Saints and will join two operating in the country — the Bogotá Colombia Temple, dedicated in 1999, and the Barranquilla Colombia Temple, dedicated in 2018. President Nelson announced a fourth house of the Lord — in Medellín — in October 2024 general conference.
Colombia is home to more than 215,000 Latter-day Saints comprising over 250 congregations in 31 stakes. Missionaries first arrived in Colombia in May 1966, when then-Elder Spencer W. Kimball organized the first branch in the country.
