First Presidency releases site for Florianópolis Brazil Temple

A house of the Lord in Florianópolis — 1 of 23 total in Brazil — was first announced in April 2024 general conference

The First Presidency of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has released the site location of the Florianópolis Brazil Temple, the first house of the Lord both in the metropolitan area of Florianópolis and Brazil’s southern state of Santa Catarina.

The temple will be built on a 5.5-acre site located Rua Cassol, 1120, Kobrasol, São José, Santa Catarina, Brazil. A Church meetinghouse is located a block south of the site, at the intersection of Rua Cassol and Rua José Gonzaga Regina Lima.

São José is a municipality in the greater Florianópolis area that surrounds the western, continental side of Florianópolis proper.

No other details — including size and dimensions — were announced with the site location. Additional information — including exterior renderings — will be released later.

The site was first published Monday, Feb. 3, on ChurchofJesusChrist.org.

President Russell M. Nelson announced a house of the Lord for Florianópolis on April 7, 2024, during the April 2024 general conference. It was one of 15 new temple sites he identified at that time.

The site of the Florianópolis house of the Lord is located about 155 miles (250 kilometers) southeast of the Curitiba Brazil Temple and about 230 miles (370 kilometers) northeast of the Porto Alegre Brazil Temple. Those two are the closest operating houses of the Lord to Florianópolis.

Nearly 1.5 million Latter-day Saints in more than 2,170 congregations reside in Brazil, with missionary work and Church operations dating back to 1928.

Brazil is home to 23 total houses of the Lord dedicated, under construction or announced, including the São Paulo Brazil Temple, the first not only in Brazil but all of South America when it was dedicated in 1978.

Other dedicated and operating temples are in Belém, Brasília, Campinas, Curitiba, Fortaleza, Manaus, Porto Alegre, Recife, Rio de Janeiro and Salvador, with three temples under construction in Belo Horizonte, Londrina and Ribeirão Preto.

Eight other houses of the Lord beside the one in Florianópolis are in planning and design — in Goiânia, João Pessoa, Maceió, Natal, Santos, São Paulo East, Teresina and Vitória.
